A family-run fruit and veg shop in the heart of Booval, with a proper Indian grocery alongside it.
Fresh Country Markets started with one conviction. A local fruit shop can do better than a supermarket if the owner actually cares about what's on the shelf. So that's what we built.
We're at Booval Fair Shopping Centre on Brisbane Road, serving the Booval, Ipswich, Raceview, North Booval and wider Ipswich community. The shop runs on morning runs to Brisbane Markets Rocklea, an eye for produce quality, and a team of ten to fifteen who love what they do.
Over the years, we've added a full Indian grocery section to the fruit and veg. Regular customers asked for it, we listened, and now people travel from across the region for our spices, dals, rice and fresh Indian vegetables.
Brisbane Markets at Rocklea is where Queensland's growers bring their produce. Most of the state's fresh fruit and veg moves through that floor before it hits retail. We go there. Daily.
Kuljinder or one of the senior team is at Rocklea before sunrise most days. We hand-select what's going on our shelves that day.
Supermarkets buy varieties that ship and store well. We buy what tastes best this week. If the Burnett oranges are stunning, that's what we have. If Queensland mangoes are peaking, you'll see them in volume.
Market to shelf in under a day. Compare that to a supermarket distribution centre where produce can sit for 5 to 10 days before it reaches a store.
We have ten to fifteen people on the floor between full-time and casual. Some have been with us for years. What they all share is they can tell you which pear is ripe, which mango is for tonight, and which variety of pumpkin roasts best for soup.
It sounds basic. It isn't. Walk into most supermarkets and ask a staff member the difference between a Navel orange and a Valencia, or when the Imperial mandarins kick in versus the Murcotts. You'll get a shrug. That's the difference.
We also employ locally. Jobs at Fresh Country Markets are real jobs in the Booval and Ipswich community, held by people who live here.
Okra, karela (bitter gourd), methi leaves, drumsticks, fresh turmeric and ginger root, curry leaves. The vegetables that home cooks need for real Indian cooking.
Not the tiny supermarket jars. Whole cumin, black mustard seeds, cardamom pods, kashmiri chilli powder, real fenugreek. Plus regional pickles, ghee and sweets.
When stone fruit is in, we have it in volume. When winter citrus peaks, that's our hero. You see what's actually good right now, not a year-round sameness.
